Magic
Hey everyone! I decided to skip ahead a not write that other story as I planned. I hope you enjoyed Don't Look Back! In this story there won't be any journal entries, but plain Jess and Will! Here is a quick review of what happened before my story started:
Jessica and Will were happily dating, before he broke it off, claiming he needed space. Elizabeth and Conner are as happy as ever. Now, this story is solely based on Jessica and Will. Hope you enjoy it!
Magic
Be Careful What You Wish For
Jessica Wakefield stared in the foggy bathroom mirror. Her lips trembled slightly and she groaned. I can't start crying again. Jessica moaned silently. She forced a watery smile. Suddenly the bathroom door to Elizabeth's door flew open. Before Jessica had a chance to say anything Elizabeth buried her head inside a drawer searching frantically.
"Ugh! Jess, I need some help. I am getting ready for my date with Conner..." Elizabeth started but trailed off. "Ah-ha! I found it!" Liz squealed, pulling a small compact of blue eyeshadow out of a wooden drawer.
"Can I borrow this...Jess! What's wrong!" Elizabeth gasped, her blue-green eyes clouding with concern.
"Will dumped me." Jessica whispered hoarsely. She bit her red lip and closed her eyes, fighting the tears that were building up behind her eyes.
"Oh my God, Jess! I am so sorry." Elizabeth said and pulled her trembling sister into her arms. "What happened? Why is he doing this to you?"
"He said that he needed space and I was to..to...clingy!" Jessica wailed pulling out of her sisters arms. The sound of the doorbell made the girls jump and Jessica stared into Liz's eyes.
"Right, well, we'll talk later, Jess. Feel better." Elizabeth said distractedly as she backed out of the door. Right, just like all the times you said we would talk before. But now that Conner is in your life you barely had a chance to talk to me about anything. Jessica thought bitterly.
Will Simmions looked at the picture of Jessica one last time before placing the frame on his bedside table, where it belonged. She was smiling in the picture, looking so happy that she might burst. Actually, they both looked happy. Will saw the same expression on Jessica's face as his own.
"Why did I do this to you, Jess?" Will whispered. He gulped in a deep breath and picked up the picture again. "You weren't too clingy, the problem was me all along, Jess. Me." Will mumbled wiping a tear that sprang at the corner of his blue eyes.
Evan Plummer laughed atuomatically at something that Andy said. He stared at the table of his friends. Elizabeth, Conner, Andy, Tia, Maria, Ken and even Angel had come back into town for the weekend. He was happy, alright. Happy sitting alone staring at all the happy little couples.
"Hey, Liz, where's Jess?" Evan asked suddenly, interupting what Elizabeth was saying completely.
"She didn't want to go out tonight or something. Oh yeah...Will broke up with her, I think." Elizabeth said distractidly. Evan's heart dropped to his white Adidas sneakers. She's free! He thought excitedly, Jessica was finally his for the taking!
"He what?!" Tia exclaimed.
"Yeah, I wasn't really paying attention." Elizabeth shurgged and smiled at Conner. "I just wanted to get away from her, ya know?"
"We gotta go talk to her!" Maria said, jumping to her feet.
"Yeah, let's go, Liz. This is really serious. Jessica must be dying right now."Tia jumped in.
Evan barely heard the girls, his thoughts moved to Elizabeth. How can anyone be so cruel? He thought to himself angrily.
"Come on, she needs to be alone." Elizabeth snapped. "Who cares about her right now? We're having a good time and I don't want her to ruin it!" Liz's voice suddenly became harsh.
Maria and Tia sat down slowly everyone's gaze shifted to Liz. "They'll get back together soon. It's just a phase. Will and Jess love eachother."
Even though the words sliced through Evan's gut, he knew they weren't true. Anyone who dumped Jessica Wakefield must be out of his mind.
Isn't She Lovely?
Evan ran a hand through his unruly dark, curly brown hair. He sighed checking his reflection once more in his rearview mirror. All I want is a chance. Evan thought to himself wistfully as he climbed out of his red Celica.
Evan saw the familiar site of Conner's board back and hurried over. "Conner, man, wait up!" Evan shouted. Conner turned around and smirked his usual smirk.
"Hey, Ev, what's up?" Conner asked.
"Not much. You know where I can find Jessica isn't-she-lovely Wakefield. God, she's perfect. She's free now, Con. I know that we'll be good together, I can feel it. I just need to talk to her."
"Naw. But if you really want her dude, see how everything clears with Will first. Don't want to take her-" Conner suddenly broke off, nearly twenty feet away was the Wakefield twins. Jessica looked frail and exhausted while Elizabeth looked ecstatic, and they were fighting.
"Liz, please! It's my week to use the-"Jessica started.
"Jess, just this once! Are you always this bratty? God, I am asking to use the jeep, not to borrow your precious clothes. Stop acting like such a moronic idiot. Get over Will!" Elizabeth shouted in a tight, angry voice.
Jessica stared into her sister's eyes, and from the view Evan was getting it looked like Jessica couldn't say another word. Without a glance back, Jessica tossed the keys to jeep onto the ground in front of Elizabeth and sprinted off.
Evan shot a glance at Conner. "I gotta talk to her, man." Evan said gruffly, and quickly made his way after Jessica.
Jessica hunched down on the top bleacher by the football field. She pressed her shaking hands into her soaking wet face. I'm all alone. No one cares about me. She thought miserably.
"Jessica?" A soft, gentle, soothing voice intoned.
Jessica looked up into the comforting face of Evan Plummer.
"What?" She asked softly.
"I just wanted to see if you were ok. I saw you running out of the parking lot and I just wanted to make sure everything was cool...Is it?"
"No." Jessica sighed. "I might as well tell you, if you haven't heard already, Will broke up with me. We're over. Kaput. Now that Liz has turned her back on me I don't know what I am going to do." Jessica said, shaking her head softly.
Evan sat down next to her. "Jessica, I know you might not really want a friend right now-but I'm here for you, ok? If you want to talk or anything at all, you can always come to me." Evan soothed.
"Thanks, Evan." Jessica replied. "I just don't know what I did wrong. He said I was too clingy. I don't know what that means, maybe I am not good-looking enough for him, or not smart enough. I don't know what I've done but I want to take it back so badly."
"Jess, you are beautiful, smart, funny, and sweet. I don't know why Will would ever want to break up with you." Evan looked down at Jessica's shaking form and decided that this was the time. He carefully placed a comforting arm around her and pulled her closer.
Jessica didn't realize Evan was holding her in his arms until the bell rang, jolting her out of her sorrows. Jessica gently pulled herself out of Evan's arm and smiled shakily at him.
"Thank you, Evan." She whispered as she backed down the bleachers.
Will looked at the bleachers with a glare spread across his features. Jessica had just been in Evan Plummer's arms? He couldn't take being away from Jessica much longer, Will knew that if he didn't tell her the truth about why he broke up with her than he'd be finished for good.
Will jogged after Jessica. His gym teacher wasn't here that day and there was no sub for him so the class had decided to just do whatever.
"Jess!" Will shouted.
Jessica whipped around, her face white. "Will?" She gasped as he came closer.
"Look I just wanted to tell you the reason why I had to break up with you was because..." Suddenly Will's excuse didn't seem good enough. Will took a deep breath. He didn't know what do say.
"Yes?"
"Because you aren't as beautiful as Melissa. I'm sorry." Will blurted.
"I-I..."Jessica's face turned a few shades whiter and her eyes filled with tears.
"No. No." She whispered.
Will stared into her shocked eyes, wishing that he hadn't said what he just had. Jessica looked so broken, so terrified that he couldn't take it anymore.
"I'm sorry, Jess. You just aren't as...thin, and wonderful looking as she is." Will lied and back away.
Jessica bit her lip. "I have to go on a diet." She mumbled. "I need to lose weight. I'm too fat."
Chapter 3:
A Little Push in the right Direction
"Damnit!" Jessica bellowed angrily as she sucked in her stomach even more tightly. I am never going to be thin enough for Will. She thought to herself miserably.
"Jessica Wakefield?" A haughty tone snarled as the door to the girl's room slammed shut. Jessica glanced up nervously. Melissa Fox stood ten feet away from her, a wicked smile on her face.
"I heard you and Will broke up. You poor thing. Too bad he didn't feel the same way when we were chatting last night." Melissa said sweetly, but Jessica barely heard her.
Unlike Melissa, who stared at Jessica's pale face, Jessica's eyes were focused on Melissa's tiny waist. I can do that. Jessica thought to herself. Suddenly she realized that Melissa was staring at her.
"Don't worry, Liss. Will and I will be back together in a few days." With that Jessica pushed right past Melissa, already feeling better.
Conner's eyes bulged out of his head (Or at least it FELT that way) as he took site of Elizabeth. Her face wasn't as sunny as it had been this morning, and her face was streaked with black. Mascara. He thought fondly. Just like at Andy's party.
"Liz, are you ok?" Conner asked, dropping to her side on the wrought iron bench. "What happened?" He wondered aloud. Mentally checking for signs of ripped clothes or bruises.
"I don't know why I am being so awful to Jessica. It's just every time I think about her I just...tense up." Liz whispered. "You saw the God awful fight we had this morning. We've been having a lot of them lately, and they are all my fault!" Elizabeth wailed, tears pouring over her cheeks.
"Liz, Liz..." Conner muttered as he pulled her into a warm hug. "Why don't you just take a break form Jess?" He suggested softly.
"I think I might just so that. I don't know why I turn so evil whenever I am with Jess, but I just do, and I don't know how to stop." Elizabeth said softly.
"Take a break...Come on, Liz. This means you and me can spend more time together." Conner prodded.
Elizabeth grinned. "I don't think I could ever deny that proposition." Elizabeth said, giggling.
"Me either." Conner whispered as he covered her lips with his.
Melissa pinched her lips together tightly. What was that all about? She thought to herself. For the first time ever, Jessica Wakefield had stood up for herself.
"She must really like Will." Melissa groaned.
She ripped her brown brush from her purse and pushed it through her black hair. I need a plan. Melissa thought to herself savagely. Melissa had found it really odd that Jessica had stared at her tiny waist, instead of the floor like she normally did.
"Aww, does little Jessie need to lose some weight? I'm sure I can help with that." Melissa grinned wickedly into the mirror. Soon enough Jessica will be out of the picture and Will will be all mine.
Chapter 4:
Liar, Liar
"No, no!" Jessica wailed into the darkness. A cold sweat dripped down her forehead as Jessica jumped up. She pushed her blankets of her bed and ran to the window.
The dream had been all to real. It had taken place when Will told her she wasn't good enough. For the past two nights Jessica had had that dream, where she found out she wasn't skinny enough for Will.
Feeling as though the room had begun to close around her, Jessica dashed down the stairs and out the back door to the oval shaped swimming pool that was in the Wakefield's backyard. Jessica took a long deep breath, pushing a clump of blonde hair out of her eyes.
"Jessica? Are you ok?" A low voiced whipsered into the night air. Jessica looked up nervously, and sighed in relief as she realized it was just her neighboor, Jeremy Aames. (You all remember how he had to move right? Well, just who his new neighboorhood best friend is? That's right, Jessica! They both put their pasts behind and became friends)
Jessica smiled shakily and looked and Jeremy and his friends, Trent and Stan. Jessica remembered Jeremy telling her about his family going away for the week and his friends staying with him.
"I'm fine." She lied easily, pulling her hair out of the tangled mess of a ponytail as she walked over to where the three boys were hanging out.
She shook her head slowly. "I just had this nightmare about the quake. Sometimes I have these memories that I can't shake. I just needed to make suer my sister wasn't drowing in the pool." She said.
"Ok."Jeremy replied.
"I better get going."Jessica groaned. "There is a cheerleading practice tomorrow morning and I have no idea how I am going to wake up at 5 in the morning now." Jessica laughed, forcing a sunny smile.
"See ya'll later."
"Bye Jess." Choursed the three boys.
Jeremy stared at Jessica's back as she walked back inside. "She was lying, wasn't she?" He asked his friends.
"No doubt." Stan agreeded.
"Maybe she didn't want to talk about." Trent suggested.
"I don't know. Jess has been acting really strange lately."Jeremy sighed. "It's not any of my business, so I'll just leave it at that."
"Wake up sleepy head!" A voice chirped in Jessica's ear the next morning.
"Huh?" She muttered, her voice sleep ridden.
"That's right! We're taking you out to breakfast, so fix that hair, and brush those teeth because, oh my, you look awful." Someone else said.
Jessica opened her eyes slowly. Andy Marsden and Tia Ramriez were sitting on her bed, smiling.
"Go away!" Jessica groaned, hurrling a pillow in Andy's direction.
"No can do, ma'am. We're going to Egg Beaters whether you like it or not!" Andy said in a deep, corny, voice
"Ok, ok. Give me ten minutes!" Jessica grumbled.
Twenty minutes later, the three friends were driving out of Jessica's neighboorhood. "Ok, Wakefield, here's the deal, breakfast is on us, so get whatever you want." Tia said.
"You guys don't have to do that!" Jessica excalimed.
"Yes we do. So don't aruge." Tia said grinning.
How am I going to get through this breakfast with my new diet? Jessica thought to herself nervously. There is no way I am going to get away without eating anything unless.... Jessica mused a plan forming in her head.
Chapter 5:
Something is Up
Tia eyed Andy warily across the small booth in El Carro's popular breakfast joint, Egg Beaters. Andy started back at Tia, and he looked deadly serious.
"Aren't you hungry, Jess?" Andy asked. "It's 10:30, you gotta want some food in your system!"
"I'm really not hungry. I had a midnight snack last night...well, it was really a midnight feast. I just don't want anything to eat." Jessica said softly.
"Ok, Jess. Cut the crap. What's going on?" Tia snapped in a harsh voice.
"Nothing is going on! I'm just not hungry, ok? God, it's like I'm some freak or something. Why won't you guys just leave me alone?" Jessica growled. She jumped up and grabbed her purse before stomping out of the restaurant.
"Let's go." Tia said, dropping a few bills on their table.
Conner smiled lazily at the sight of Elizabeth sitting next to him at the parking lot of Egg Beaters. "Ready for breakfast?" He questioned.
"Sure. Let's go." Liz replied, hopping out of the car.
Conner climed out after her, and suddenly his smile froze. Jessica Wakefield was hunched over on the sidewalk in front of Egg Beaters, sobbing. He glanced nervously at Elizabeth who had already caught glance of her distraught sister.
Conner walked over to Elizabeth camly and took her hand. " We need to talk to her." He said softly. Liz nodded, as they started to walk closer a Chevy Blazer pulled into the parking lot. A Chevy Blazer with two passengars who Jessica Wakefield didn't need to see right now.
Will's mouth fell open when he saw Jessica crying with Andy and Tia rushing out of the doors to Egg Beaters to talk to her. But when Melissa saw her, all hell broke loose.
"What the hell is going on here, Will? Did you call her here to meet us? I thought you said it was just you and me, Will. Just us, forever." Melissa whispered with a heartbreaking sob.
"I didn't know she was coming here, Liss. Don't worry, it is going to be us forever." He whispered, storking her raven's hair slowly. Hating himself even more he unbuckled his seatbelt and slid over to Melissa. "I love you." He choked out the words, his throat tightening. "I love you with all my heart." Will stammered this time, but before Melissa could say a word about it, he kissed her.
"Jessica, we should go..talk about this later." Tia suggested.
"I don't need you guys to get me home. Liz and....Conner are here. They can help me." Jessica lied.
Andy reached for Jessica's hand and pulled her up. "We need to go, Jessica. Now." For the first time ever he had used a forceful tone.
"Ok." She whispered and let her friends drag her towards Andy's car. But just as she was about to get into the car, she saw them.
"Oh, no. Oh God, no." She whispered.
Throwing herself into the backseat Jessica closed her eyes, willing the picture to leave her. "Take me home, Andy. Please." She whsipered.
"Ok, Jess, we're going."
Elizabeth's eyes watered at her sister's stare. Her whole world seemed to be crashing down on her and Elizabeth couldn't do a thing about it.
"I gotta go home and talk to her, Conner. Something is up with Melissa and Will and I don't like it."
Chapter 6:
A Few Changes
"Hey Liz!" Evan Plummer called over the voices of the several hundred teenagers who rushed through the halls of Sweet Valley High. Elizabeth looked up, a smile forming on her lips.
"Hey, Evan!" She replied, wiping a strand of blonde hair out of her eyes.
"Do you know if Jessica is going to be to home this afternoon? She promised me help on this English assignment and I really need it." Evan lied, a smile popping up on his face.
"Sure she'll be home. There is no cheerleading practice and she isn't working." Liz said.
Evan nodded slowly. "Thanks, Liz." He muttered, as he turned away. Gotta talk to Jess. It's now or never pal. Evan thought grimly.
Jessica stepped into a gray pair of swetpants and sighed. She had only lost one pound in the past few days and that certianly wasn't enough if she wanted to be as skinny as Melissa. She gathered her short blonde hair in a high ponytail and just as she was about to go take a nap, the doorbell rang.
Great. Jessica grumbled to herself. This is just what I need right now...
Evan wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans as he waited for the door to open. "Come on, come on." He muttered.
Suddenly the door flew open and a tired looking Jessica Wakefield peered out.
"Evan?" She gasped.
"Hey, Jess. How's it going?"
"Pretty good. What are you doing here?" Jessica asked supsiously.
"I came over to see how you were holding up. Can I come in?" Even Evan was surprised at his own boldness.
"Sure. I guess..." Jessica opened the door more widley and ushered him inside.
She led him to the backdoor, where they went to the patio and took seats on two lawn chairs.
"I want to get straight to the point, Jess, what's going on? Have you talked to Will?"
Jessica looked at Evan questionly. Why does he care? She thought miserably.
"No, he asked called or stopped by to talk to me. I think it's over."Jessica mumbled.
Evan wiped the grin that was forming off of his face. "Well, listen. A whole bunch of us....Conner, Liz, Maria, Ken, Andy, and Tia are going to see some free concert or something tonight at the convention center. Ya wanna come?"
Jessica looked up at Evan. Lips trembling. "Will and I were going to go that." She whispered.
Evan's face when white. "Oh, God. I'm sorry Jess. Never mind. Oh, I just made an ass of myself. I'm so sorry. I...better go. Sorry." Evan stammered, backing away.
Jessica stared after Evan. There need to be a few changes around here. She thought midly. First, no more food. Second, find out what the hell is going on with Evan Plummer.
